Opening a 1960s Home to Modern Family Living

|

This project in Kotara South centred around a solid 1960s home with good foundations, but a layout that no longer suited the way the clients wanted to live.

The homeowners, a young couple planning for a growing family, were drawn to the suburb for its established character, large trees, and long-term potential. While the existing home had strong bones, the internal layout felt closed off and disconnected from the backyard, with living spaces that reflected a very different era of family life.

The goal was not to replace the character of the original home, but to extend it in a way that felt natural and better connected to everyday living.

The Brief

The brief focused on opening the rear of the home and improving how the main living spaces functioned.

The clients wanted:

  • an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area connected to the backyard
  • more natural light through the centre of the home
  • a private master suite integrated into the extension
  • finishes and detailing that felt consistent with the original house rather than visually disconnected

The extension needed to feel like part of the home, not an obvious addition added years later.

The Design Response

The rear extension was designed to push the main living spaces towards the garden, creating a stronger indoor-outdoor connection and allowing more natural light into the centre of the home.

The kitchen became the focal point of the layout, designed as a functional family space rather than something separated from the rest of the living areas. Premium joinery and a custom rangehood helped shape the visual character of the space, while the overall layout did most of the work in improving how the home functions day to day.

To the rear of the extension, the new master suite was positioned as a quieter retreat from the rest of the house, with finishes and detailing selected to integrate cleanly with the original home.

Light-filled and easy to live in, the kitchen opens out to leafy garden views through the dining nook.

A quiet corner of the deck, made for slow afternoons in the sun.

The kitchen sits at the heart of the home, with timber underfoot and the outdoors just a step away.

A shaded spot for weekend barbecues, with the garden and gums framing the view.

Construction and Delivery

Like many extensions, the challenge was not just building the new spaces, but integrating them properly with the existing structure.

Careful attention was given to transitions between old and new, ensuring the extension felt cohesive rather than visually separate from the original house. Selections, detailing, and material choices were all considered in relation to the existing home so the final result felt consistent throughout.

The project was delivered through a fixed-cost contract with a single point of contact maintained from contract through to handover. Supplier delays and coordination issues were managed throughout the build to keep progress moving and reduce pressure on the clients during construction.

Key Features

  • Rear extension with open-plan kitchen, dining, and living
  • New master suite positioned to the rear of the home
  • Bradnams windows and louvres throughout
  • Premium kitchen joinery and integrated rangehood
  • Material selections and detailing designed to complement the original home

The Outcome

The finished extension transforms how the home functions without losing the character that drew the clients to the property in the first place.

The living spaces now feel open, connected, and filled with natural light, while the rear extension creates a clearer relationship between the home and the garden. The master suite adds privacy and separation, giving the home a layout better suited to long-term family living.

More importantly, the extension feels integrated into the original house rather than competing with it, allowing the old and new parts of the home to work together as a complete whole.

“We couldn’t be happier with how the extension turned out. Liam and the team made the whole process feel manageable.”- Homeowner, Kotara South

A Final Thought

Good extension projects are not just about adding space.

They are about improving how the existing home works, while making sure the new spaces feel connected to what was already there.

This project is a strong example of how thoughtful planning, careful integration, and consistent delivery can reshape an older home without losing the character that made it worth keeping in the first place.
